“Its 2011 and I have no idea of what anything is or what it does any more” - James Birdle ‘Waving at the machines’.
I based my brief primarily on this quote linking to the New Aesthetic. It refers to how technology is becoming so advanced so quickly we do not know what tomorrow will bring and will we soon not know what is reality and what is not. Digital or Physical? Just as when we were children our imaginations are endless and we create ‘imaginary friends’ in our heads and believe they are real but they are not really there.
Using an iphone pocket projector we placed a digital character into the physical world, observing how it explores and interacts with its surroundings it now sees itself in.
The piece is filmed so the digital character appears almost as a physical person highlighting how modern advances in technology will soon be able to deceive us to whats real or not.
The narrative we have created with this is a short story consisting of a designer who is stubborn to traditional design processes, the digital character represents the future and the advantages in modern technology. After initial refusal to interact with the character the designer then finally collaborates with him finding it works well, becoming a modern contemporary designer. All done in a humorous and quirky way.
The piece is presented with minimal sound as if it is being projected itself just as it is created in the cinema, linking to the projector used to create our digital character.
